Our glass wall tiles are created by layering crushed glass, metal leaf and iridescent glass on a base of sheet glass. This layer is then heated in a kiln to 1450 degrees to fuse the materials. This process is repeated numerous times to attain the detail and color desired. The metal leaf adds visual depth and visual interest.

OUR FUSED GLASS TILE PROCESS...

process-drawing

This shows the initial layout and photo reference. We have located the blossoms on the white sheet glass used as our base.

process-background-layer

We begin by layering glass powders to build the background layer. The glass is then fired in our kiln and this process is repeated several times.

After the background color and depth is acheived, we layer the leaves, branches and flowers with glass powder and crushed glass, known as "frit". The layers are fired each time, slowly building to five or more layers.

And after firing, while still in the kiln.

Overall each tile has been in the kiln over 160 hours. The sheets are slowly brought to a temperature of 1450 degrees Farenheit, allowed to soak for 15 minutes and then cooled slowly, or annealed, to stablize the glass. It is then cut to dimension to be mounted as wall tile.

This is how the glass powders look before they are fired.
